Anapod and what makes an application a killer app

Some tools you just cant help loving and Anapod from
redchairsoftware.com is one of them. I dislike itunes and the reason is
probably because Apple doesn’t really care how bad iTunes works with PC.
Anyways, I am sure iTunes is good for some people, but not me. So I have
been using Anapod and it keeps getting better and better and it sure was
worth the $25 I paid especially when I was given a whole year’s of free
upgrades. And since the dev team of this company seems to use some sort
of agile development method, they keep churning out new versions a
couple of times a month which as a user I love even though the changes
are small. For instances this latest version allowed me to directly sync
my outlook contacts with my contacts in the iPod, instead me having to
manually export them to vCard version and then drag and drop them. Very
simple feature, and awesome!
Which bring me to another related subject that I think about a lot from
time to time. What makes a tool a killer application? Certain things
have to be there, like user friendliness, usefulness, flexibility and a
number of other things that the every developer knows about, but at the
end there is probably a few competitors out there that might slow down
the pace that a killer app is discovered at. For instance, if I develop
tool X that does something and has Y and Z as competitors, I guess one
way of winning over users from Y and Z is to give them ability to import
data from Y and Z to my app, otherwise they are not going to be as keen
to give up their current application and start using mine. But that is
also not going to be enough I think. You also have to give the user the
ability to export their settings and data to other formats so they won’t
feel locked in to your application.
This might sound idiotic at first but it makes sense if you think about
it. For instance, when I look at a new software, the first thing I look
at after actually liking the features, is to see can I import things
from a similar application I am using? And also can I export them back
to the same application in case I later discover I don’t like it? If
not, then forget it, because I don’t want to be locked into this new
application and later on find out that I don’t like it and have to redo
everything in case I want to switch.
I read an article about history of Lotus 123 and Microsoft excel the
other day and I found out that Lotus 123 TOTALLY dominated the market
before Excel. So what did Microsoft do? Apart from lotsa marketing that
was good but didn’t really bring about the mass conversion they built in
the export/import features I mentioned above and that turned out to be
the key to winning most people.=20
Fire fox is an example of an app that does this half way, ie, it imports
things from IE but won’t let you export things which is starting to
bother me more and more. Not because I want to take my cookies and
history and change browser, but because when I want to reimage my PC all
that gets lost simply because they have locked me in.
I guess on a philosophical level, one could ask the question if it is
matter of honesty to allow the user to come over AND leave when they
want?

I need to know if this application will allow me to transfer videos to my 30g ipod video. Any answers will be greatly appreciated. If it can ideed do that with the videos then I plan on buying this program. Also because I cannot stand Itunes. GRR.

Anapod worked on my machine…until rebooted.
I did as every good “user” would do, and contacted support.
5 emails and 7 days later, no response… So I disputed the transaction with paypal, RedChair still didn’t even respond to the dispute.
If it works for you, good for you. I wouldn’t give my money to this fly-by-night operation, as if you have a problem, you will either be contacted extrememly slowly (dozens of emails), or not at all.

I just purchased from them. I was having an error coming up every time I tried to add songs to my iPod. I called Apple and they didn’t know what the problem was. Picked up another one and same problem. They said it was probably my laptop. Tried at home and no success, formatted the drive on my iMac, tried iTunes on my Mac and no success. I was getting really upset by then. I just went online and and looked for an alternative. This software actually made me keep my iPod. I am grateful, if it doesn work for some people I wouldn’t know why. I actually recommend it to anyone who is having problem with their iTunes or not, this is a must have.

I’m no lover of iTunes, that’s why I bought Anapod and used version 8.9.9. The idea is nice. Unfortunately they are liers.
The bottom line is I’m very unhappy with it. Unless you see a blog of RedChair’s developers or some other way to find actual stuff about what they are working on, don’t bother with it.
A weird thing is that the software acts as a web server you can use to browse the iPod. Pretty weird usecase, IMO, since I’d rather use it when I’m away from the computer.

I completely agree with the earlier comments about the lack of support and Red Chair Software being a fly-by-night operation. I paid for the product and the installer won’t even work. I get the “Installer file expired” error. Do I know if they are reading my emails for support? Do I know when to expect a new release of the installer to fix the problem? Do I have a phone number to call? Is there a name of a human being who works for Red Chair Software I can refer to? The answer to all these questions is No. I think I have wasted my money.

Red Chair Software is a WASTE of Money!!!
What the hell is it with me and CRAPPY companies that are supposed to provide service, BUT DON’T?
We all know that the spat between Microsoft and Apple causes our programs to “not play together nicely in the sandbox”, and some companies have developed ways to get around this. One company of assholes, Red Chair Software, came out with the Anapod Explorer to rip-off the public under the guise of helping to ease the MS/APPLE issues.
When all I had was my one 3rd generation iPod, the software worked, and all was right with the world. Then we got iPod #2, and the start of my problems began…
Turns out, that my “3rd generation” software cost $25, but a “Universal Edition” was $30. When all I had was the one iPod, there was no question. Turns out, though that the one for 5 bucks more will work with “all of a family’s iPods”.
Why do they do this? One word: Confusion. See, IF you buy the “3rd generation” version and get another iPod later on, you are forced to buy ANOTHER $25 version. If you had purchased the $30 “Universal Version” in the first place, it would automatically cover the new iPod.
Why wouldn’t they just sell the more expensive version, and be done with it? Again, CONFUSION. If you are confused about their product, they can sell another $25 version, then they’ve almost DOUBLED their bottom line. But the public wouldn’t STAND for a company who marketed software that only worked with one iPod at a time. So they’ve got DENIABILITY.
Red Chair Software can say: “We’ve got one version that covers ALL your iPods.” And LOOK like the good guys. But they’re not. Part of the cost of software is SUPPOSED to cover “normal” support. RED CHAIR SOFTWARE DOES NOT GIVE SUPPORT TO THEIR USERS.
Each version of this software is SUPPOSED to work on WHATEVER computer you put it on. So, I’ve got it on my home and work PC’s. Only thing is, THIS SHIT ANAPOD SOFTWARE FROM RED CHAIR SOFTWARE RECOGNIZES MY IPOD AS ANOTHER NEW GODDAMN IPOD AT WORK, THAN IT DOES AT HOME!!!
This means I have to BUY ANOTHER LICENSE from these assholes at Red Chair Software – so this shitty software will work on my office PC!!!
Well, Fuck that, Red Chair Software. You burned me for $50, and that’s all you’ll get from me.
I’ve emailed them NUMEROUS times, and they will NOT answer my emails.
(Now before you say: “Gee BG, you’re all “F” this and a-hole that, no wonder they don’t write you back.” Please know that I sent them 4 emails and a web form that were extremely polite. – AFTER WEEKS of not getting back to me, THAT’S when I put the BOXING GLOVES ON.)

I bought Anapod about a year ago after my PC’s hard-drive crashed and I had no way via iTunes to move my library from my iPod back to my PC. Anapod was a lifesaver, and easy as spit to use.
I have a hard time believing some of the comments above about this being a fly-by-night company – they are attached to a major university – obviously not going anywhere. Also, their descriptions in their webstore make it VERY clear that for $5 more, you can get the ‘ultimate’ edition of whatever you’re buying (which ultimately means free lifetime upgrades/re-downloads) – don’t let someone who obviously didn’t read anything about what they were purchasing sway you. Go to the Redchair site and see for yourself – it is very professional and clearly run by music fans who wanted to provide a software that provides a simple, intuitive, Windows-based interface to your iPod that doesn’t treat you like a criminal when it comes to managing your own library.

Frankly the B.G. guy is full of crap. After years of struggling with iTunes, with a fairly large database of 75Gb, Anapod is the only one that I’ve found that works properly. It does have it’s limitations but I believe they’ll fix these things over time. It is iTunes that sucks, it’s become overblown, costly in time, and utterly hopeless with large databases.
And Xstreamer is a work of art.

Much has been said about Red Chair Softwares service (or complete absence of) on this and other forums already.
I am that passionate about the headache this organisation has caused me, that I am joining up forums to just to warn others and give my two cents worth.
Much same experience as reported elsewhere, have had issues – multiple e-mails sent to service request, order site, unique customer problem report number generated; but Alas! no response from any.
Saw that somebody else had refund from purchase via Paypal dispute.
Have since done proceedings myself.
Funnily enough, which is quite a coincidence really, since I have done this, and sent my intentions to Red Chair, my registered e-mail address has been receiving Spam e-mails at a ridiculous rate of attrition.
Now I can’t be certain, and certainly can’t make accusations, but one would certainly hope ANY organisation would be above selling or providing one’s registered particulars to Spam organisations out of spite or malice, particularly when their service and subsequently product was abhorrently woeful.
